Many of us would like to know how to lose 20 pounds in a month, and if it is even possible.   While it definitely is possible, it’s a fact that the faster we lose weight, the faster we will regain the lost weight if we let our guard down and resume our old eating pattern.  This is because our bodies react to a drastic cut in calories by kicking into survival mode, slowing our metabolism to preserve the new, lower calorie intake.   Once we go off the diet and start eating as before, our body, which is still burning fewer calories, stores the extra intake of food as fat.

Drastically cutting calories can cause us to feel tired and weak.  It can also make us irritable and light-headed and be detrimental to our health.   Losing eight or ten pounds in a month is a far more realistic and comfortable goal to achieve, and the likelihood of keeping the weight off would be greater at that rate.  However, if you are still determined to lose 20 pounds in a month, one of the easiest ways of doing so is to follow a high protein/low carbohydrate diet.

Protein keeps us feeling full for longer and the process of digesting it burns calories.  Eating protein only and drastically restricting carbs should not be done for more than a few months at the most.  Any longer and health will inevitably start to suffer, as following this type of diet long term will result in a nutritional deficiency and a too low fiber intake.  Health problems associated with this include diverticulitis and constipation.

Many high protein diets advocate consuming large quantities of red meat, full-cream milk and full-fat cheeses.  While no harm should come from following this regimen for a short while, something to keep in mind is that regular, prolonged intake of foods containing high levels of saturated fat will usually result in an increase in bad cholesterol levels, which in turn can lead to heart disease.

Better high protein choices are skinless chicken or turkey, pork, lean cuts of beef and low-fat dairy products.  As for the carbohydrates to choose when wanting to lose 20 pounds in a month, stick to healthy, nutritious carbs like whole grain cereals, fruits and veggies as opposed to things like pasta and bread.
